    Nikki,

Here is a quick summary of what many people have told you, or have wanted to say.

    1. Get the boats you have now working before you start working on / buying more boats.

    2. Worry about things in a logical order. Don't worry about the guns if the boat doesn't have a motor, for example.

    3. Spend your time reading the answers you already have instead of asking the same thing over on messages boards or the telephone. People will eventually give up and not talk to you any more if you don't listen. People want to help, but get frustrated when their answers are ignored.

    4. Keep it simple. This saves time and money. Put the boat in the trunk with a couple of towels for padding instead of spending hours looking for and asking about various types of boat transportation devices. Most people that I've seen just carry their boats from their vehicle to the pond and don't have anything fancy.

I want to see you succeed in this hobby, to have a running ship, and to be able to go to an event a couple of times a year and have fun. To do that, you're going to need some help, and you're going to need to listen to that help. I believe you've said that your mother is involved in electronics. What may work is for the two of you to sit together and read the messages you've already received on the various forums, as she may understand some of the information that you don't understand (I often ask Stephen about things I don't understand that people talk about on here!). She can also help you write a reply that will get her the information she needs to be able to help you make something work.

Nikki, have you had your mom read any of these forums? That might be helpful for the both of you. If you'd like, I can email her and show her the important forums.

That depends on the ruleset you are building for.

In all rulesets I believe you need both rudders present.

IRCWCC and I believe MWC grants you 50% bonus rudder area for having dual rudders - in your case the AD is a class 4 boat so you would receive 3.75sq inches of rudder allowed (2.5 * 1.5), this would allow you to use your class 5 rudder (3sq inches) for the rudder is the best position (usually the sternmost) and you would need to create a small 0.75sq inch rudder for the other one.

Treaty I think follows the same rudder rules as MWC, but you should check with them if you intend to build Treaty as to whether or not you can have one large rudder and one eensy-teensy little one.

What you have there is a standard Battler's Connection class 5 Maryland Rudder. It is 3.00sq inches.

With the Andrea Doria, you are allowed 3.75sq inches total - for both rudders.

You need to have both rudders.

You will need to acquire, make, or cut down a 2nd rudder to 0.75 sq inches. Alternatively you can just buy the BC set made for the Andrea Doria specifically.

    Hope that helps.

As a side note Nikki, I don't know if anyone has suggested this to you or not yet, but I really recommend that you get a copy of Bob H's 'How to Build a Warship' DVD. I understand that it is quite good, explains a great many things and may help you out a lot.

He has a For Sale thread about it right here.

The long rod-like red item (the one in question I believe?) looks like a plastic sleeved push rod. It is really great for cutting into pieces to use for pole and tripod masts. Use gears or metal short pushrods for rudders, the plastic ones bind and are flimsy. Easy way to make the little rudder is take a 1/8" by 1/4" piece of brass sheet and solder it onto 1/8" brass shaft. Bingo, baby rudder. You can also use super glue, but will most likely have to glue a new little piece of rudder on every once in a while.
