Ahoy folks, I am looking for some information in preparation for my next big gun printing project. Specifically, I would like to know the center-to-center spacing between main turret cannon barrels for the following types of turrets: 1) narrow-ish triple turrets, ie Scharnhorst, Viribus Unitis, or Conti Di Cavour 2) wide-ish triple turrets, ie Iowa, South Dakota, or Roma 3) narrow-ish twin turrets, ie most WWI British and German warships 4) wide-ish twin turrets, ie Bismark, Gneisenau, etc. I hope to expand my offering of Big Gun magazines to cover a much wider variety of ships, including more barrels, different calibers, different barrel spacings, and different diameters.
While we're at it, a table of barbette sizes would also be really helpful. I'll dig up the info that I've collected.
Kotori, I’ve always taken what cannon are available rather than looking at the plans; thanks for making me think about that. I surveyed all the cannon in my possession and found a variety of results. All the results below are the spacing between the centers of the tubes 4x triple and 2x double BDE/Jason Annan (sp?) Indiana style: all 11/16” 3x quad BDE/Jason Annan (sp?) Indiana style: outside pairs spaced 5/8”, center gap 1” 1x quad unknown maker Indiana style: 11/16” 2x triple unknown maker Indiana style: 3/4” 1x triple and 1x quad unknown maker negative pressure: 5/8” 2x dual double (two turrets with a single accumulator and firing valve) BDE Terminator: 11/16” 1x dual double BDE Terminator: 5/8”
Right now, I only have one 3d printable cannon magazine posted, a twin 7/32" (or 1/4" with a little reaming) with a single layer of 3.5" OD and 0.6" barrel spacing. I hope to expand the list dramatically over this winter. While I don't plan on exactly matching the cannons to any specific ship, the goal is to have at least one option that will be close enough for most ships with twin or triple turrets. @Xanthar based on the dimensions you gave me, here is what I'm planning: narrow twins: 0.6" spacing wide twins: 1" spacing narrow triples: 0.75" spacing wide triples: 0.875" spacing It's not exactly perfect, but close enough for most ships. My biggest concern is not going so wide that, with the additional width of Big Gun barrels, having the cannons not fit inside the turret cover.
Just curious... are you assuming 1/96 scale or 1/144 ? The numbers above seem like they'd be for 1/144 scale models.
Kotori, In case you’ll take more inputs, I have needs for dual 7/32” with 3” magazines: Texas, spaced 13/16” Princess Royal, spaced 5/8” cheers,

Yes. Must be centerline distance. Otherwise you run into problems figuring out which part of the tapered barrels to measure the distance between.
I find that when I make assumptions the world likes to laugh in "well this is the way we do it over here". So now I ask these things.
