would it make sense to go the extra level and use shaped shells for maximum penatration and maybe a good catalyst for rifleing?

No. Some people already use rifled barrels, doesn't make a material difference at 5 feet of range. Not even at 10 feet of range.

I use rifled barrels mostly because they are 5/16" OD hardened steel. They do not dent. Not really useful for accuracy gain, except when firing multiple long range guns at once and you want to hit approximately the same spot with different guns.

Our gun systems would not be able to reliably handle shaped rounds as they are currently designed.

Basic rule of thumb for the "How about we do this" question is this:
If we adopt the suggestion it will be used against you by much more experienced skippers.
How do you think that's gonna pan out?

Hey at least this proposal isn't for heated shot or incendiaries.

@Battlestation - a few things to consider before getting too carried away with ideas, which I understand is easy to do, toy boats are awesome!
1 - Do you know how the current systems you are proposing to change work?
2 - Is your idea safe? We disallow explosives, incendiaries, saw blades, tesla coils and other 'fun' ideas for good reason, as well as shooting at anything above the horizontal. We also limit the Co2 pressures involved and the type of shot used. All with good reason.
3 - Is your idea feasible? We sink ships. Fairly regularly for some of us. That means the ship needs to be able to easily be recovered and prepped for the next sortie. It must be able to be reliably sent back out on the water after that sink and must be able to engage in combat. Anything less is a failure. If your idea adds 100$ in cost and reduces reliability, it will not likely gain traction.

yes I know the idea will work. the magazine would be like an airsoft gun a spring on the bottom pushing the rounds inside the firing chamber which would be promptly filled with air pushing the round out. And it would repeat this process again and again until the magazine is depleted

We're shooting at 1/32" balsa.....way harder than we need to in order to penetrate. What are you trying to shoot through that you think we need more penetration?

If you want to increase damage work on your AIM not your gun's ability to penetrate. Hit rates on the whole are typically fairly low, ~20% give or take. We could have ~5x the damage if people were better shots.....

What hobby/ruleset are you referring too? If it is just you and your buddies doing whatever(which is just fine, nothing wrong with that at all) than asking for advice on a forum for a hobby with defined rules probably isn't going to be that helpful for you.

Well, Tesla coils aren't banned outright, you just can't use them in an offensive or defensive capacity... so you could mount one just for looks :D

Might mount one on a Steam Punk coastal defense ship as a wireless power transmission for the electric drive....
