This is a lot like convoys, but it is different in other aspects. So in early 1942, the Germans had to get the Scharnhorst, Gneisenau, and Prinz Eugen from Brest, France, to Germany. And the Kreigsmarine decided to have them sail through the English Channel in broad daylight. The three large ships were accompanied by smaller destroyers. The British response was a bunch of planes and some destroyers. So the scenario I propose isn't excatly accurate, but it is still pretty historically correct on the German side. So this is how it could be played. A whole bunch of Z-Boats or other German destroyers surround and escort the three German capital ships across a pond, which would be the English Channel. The ships would leave 'Brest', and will sail 3 or 4 feet before being attacked by the British ships. Scharnhorst, the Gneisenau, and the Prinz Eugen can only have one or two cannons in operation, so the German destroyers can do most of the fighting. The British will have 5 or 6 battlecruisers and/or battleships, which will be using every firing cannon they have to sink every German ship they can, or heavily damage them. The Germans can fight back, however, and they can sink the British ships. If/when the Germans make it to 'Germany' the ships will be taken out of the water, recovered if need be, and the damage will be recorded. The fleet that would win would be the fleet that inflicted the most damage on the opposing fleet wins. Please voice your opinions on this!
Where are you going to get a whole bunch of Z boats? Destroyers are hard to build, and not many people have them. Why don't the German ships get their full compliment of cannons? They had all their cannons in real life, why take them away? Especially since their getting attacked by battle cruisers and battleships. ( not historical either )
Question 1: I understand that. Maybe Deutchlands/Lutzows to accompany the main ships? Or maybe only the Capital ships, and have them use every operable cannon? Question 2: To give the British more of a chance, and to let the other German ships control the battle.
To me, I think it's pretty much a convoy but with unfair circumstances for one side. Also, anyone who builds a German battleship would want all their cannons operational, and that might bug them.
Yeah, I also think all cannons should be operational. But this scenario is great. I have a friend who likes operation cerberus.
As long as you follow IRCWCC safety rules, you can set up the battle any way the attending captains want. Ohio does a Denmark Straits Battle here is what I say: DON'T TALK ABOUT IT just DO IT!!
