Finally, the time has come. Later today, I will be getting the Scharnhorst hull that jch72 (John) offered me earlier this month. Expect a lot of questions and requests for advice in the coming months. Photos will more than likely come slow because I will take them on my iPhone, then put them on a flash drive, then install the flash drive on the computer, then upload them to here.
I actually got two hulls. One for my Scharnhorst, and another for an 'improved' version (little to no mistakes better looking, etc..). They are both Scharnhorst hulls.
Wow, someone ( @jch72 ) is quite the man indeed. You can upload pics direct from your phone assuming you've got net access, but I think phones can only upload one image at a time rather than a dozen at a time as the bulk-uploader is flash based.
Should have been a couple of sets of John White plans with those hulls too. The Propeller location on the plans is incorrect, they were side by side. They are drawn like the Bismark propellers on the plans with the outboard props a couple of inches in front of the center propeller.
Jackson, Have fun with her, she's a great ship! this photos is is 6-years old, but you might get a kick out of her photo15.jpg Photo by NASAAN101 | Photobucket If you look close, you can see were my finger is to her forward gun.. if she was mine, I would have set her up with 5guns, a triple sturn and two single guns off each side of the bow! I think most guys will cut the windows next (use thin masking tape to outline them, then post pics here or show it to someone in the club you plan to battle with to make SURE they are right BEFORE you cut!). The smart money usually dictates that the guns get mounted next since they have to go in the scale locations and can't be moved, so all other components need to be located to not interfere, but I've seen lots of guys do the stuffing tubes, motors, and rudder next. I'm sure some other guys will chime in with hopefully better info..... I'm big gun, and those cannons are harder to work around than fast gun, which makes working the rest of your components wherever the guns aren't more important.
I tend to layout and cut the hull windows, then move to add in the subdeck to give the hull some stiffness before starting on the interior and hardware. Having the deck/subdeck also helps with component layouts since you can mark the turret locations on the deck. I got to oogle those hulls last week during the IRCWWC Nats. Lovely hulls. If I didn't already have a Scharnhorst, one of those hulls might have hitched a ride home in my car.
For inventory: What modeling tools / power tools do you already have? Dremel, hobby knife, belt sander, jig saw, drill, drill press, band saw, etc. At your age Harbor Freight is your best friend. Just upgrade when the first cheapo tool wears out.
No progress yet. The only thing I have so far is the hull. However, by the end of the month, I will probably have the deck rim and the decks of Scharney, Junior!
