I ran a Scharnhorst for three of the four nats I've been to, with triples in c, and a "rotate" in b. The rotate wasn't hard to do. I mounted a coil gun in a piece of pvc pipe that fit inside of the one I used for my barbet. I added a lip on the inner pvc so that it sat in the barbet without falling through. Then I just mounted a servo on the underside of the deck connected to the inner pvc to rotate it. I just flipped it to whichever side I wanted it on, and didn't bother to aim with the rotate setup. Aim by steering the boat when it's on the side you need it. It was my best firing gun, and the least used. Usually ran as a giant cruiser that could take a pounding. Trying to be aggressive with the sidemount usually just got me into trouble.
I think I'll have a triple stern with a stationary 1.5 unit sidemount on B. No other updates on the Scharnhorst yet, since I haven't gotten a response yet from Steven saying he is ready to cut the Scharney's decks. I'm hoping to sand the decks sometime in early August.
We're making progress on getting the vacuum table running, but not quite ready for cutting out the decks just yet. we'll keep you posted!
I find a marker or tape works well usually. Make sure you install the deck first, and have the area underneath the stern turret well marked so you don't install anything like a motor right underneath it (this is experience speaking here).
Thanks for the help! Expect more questions in the future, as I am a total novice at model warship combat shipbuilding!
We all start somewhere. Better to ask questions than to build it all out of popsicle sticks or something equally silly.
Now be nice Nick. I have a ship with the entire deck built out of popsicle sticks, and so does snipehunter. Or maybe it is coffee stirrers.
Well, the deck isn't the entire ship Coffee stirrers would make good deck planking though, I like that idea....
A vinyl decal from viciousP lasts better and is a lot easier to maintain. I'm not sure I spelled his screen name right. I miss being able to search up everyone on the forum.
On the first page of the old forum you were able to look up part of a user name and you could get a list of matches. You also were able to look up all registered users within a particular state, as long as they had entered it in their profile. ViciousP registered in Guam or somewhere though, even though he is in North Carolina. I used to use the latter feature to find interested people nearby who had registered on the website periodically and send them a PM invite to a build session if they were still apparently checking the site occasionally, instead of passively waiting for them to contact me.
I can't quite duplicate that (for various reasons - well, I could, but other irons in the fire right now and don't have the time). However, in an attempt to meet at least some of your need... if you check out 'Member Search' under 'Members' in the menu, you can now do partial match searches on usernames, locations (if they've put something there), first names and last names if they've supplied them.
Cool, it works. Have to type in NC and North Carolina as separate searches but it is good enough for me. Thanks Nick!
Yeah, it is a bit primitive, just doing a simple partial text match. WA will return Iowa for instance. To produce more intelligent results would take some more time. Something I'll probably mull over in the back of my head but not something I'm sure I'll get back to it in the immediate future.
To make marking the ribs easier, go to your local auto parts store and buy a roll of 1\4" pinstriping. (For less that $10 you can get more than enough for this ship) Once you know where you want the rib, cut a piece, peel, and apply. Whalla, perfect rib!
