My motor is the kershaw 970. It is not too much. If your motor is hot then it is working TOO much. More torque and power mean that things don't have to struggle to get up to speed or run around the lake. You are battling these boats, right? If you are doing scale models, a motor that makes your ship start and stop like the titanic may be in order...

Not anyone else by the looks of it. You are battling fast gun with it, Our motor works well in Bismarcks, why not become one of us?

    just a thought

Wasn't someone also trying brushless? That's another option.

Isn't there a thread on Brushless vs brushed? There's info there on the pros and cons of both.

Yes there is a thread in the R&D section I started and I think one or two others (one offsite link). This ship actually originally had a brushless motor in it before I sold it to Justin.

I wonder what happened to that motor?

I'm using a Johnson 970 motor and have no problem with it running in either Treaty or MWC speeds. Direct drive to a 2 blade prop.

From on I'll be using a geared / ESC design. The Alsace was direct drive, it had hella problems cutting through weeds. So I upgraded the motor, then it was hella fast. So I put a slide resister in, then it was hella smoking. I then hella decided never again go direct drive.

Greg kept the brushless motor and most importantly the brushless ESC. I retrofitted it with a geared brushed motor with ESC from the Iowa.

Moving forward, the decision tree is like this... I have one dead brushed motor ESC.

If ESC shipping back to the UK is not too much, I'll send it back to be repaired.
If repair costs aren't too much, I'll have it repaired.
Otherwise, I will buy that Mtroniks waterproof brushless ESC. (If it has fast reverse)

Damn, I could really use a day at the lake today.

So sending the brushed esc back to mtroniks on my own is toooooo expensive. However Loyalhanna is the US mtroniks distributer... (Apparently the only one?????? I'll have to ask) And they return damaged units back to england twice a year.... so I will be able to send it back for minimal cost and have it fixed (if not too expensive).

But that leaves me without a ESC for quite a few months. Not good enough. So I'm going to buy a brushless ESC.

Here is an excerpt from my discussions with mtroniks.....

JS> So if the current is LIMITED to 30amps, and the motor "requests" more.... What happens? Does the motor will just slow down? Or will it just suddenly stop? What happens if the prop is fouled? The current demand from the motor will spike... What will the esc do then?

Mtroniks> The controller will hold drop the power back to just below 30Amps, it won’t just stop. the prop is fouled the controller will do the same as above.
Mtroniks>The Hydra 30 brushless ESC has instant reverse and symmetrical power in each direction.
Mtroniks>You can use any sensorless brushless motor and prop combination

So... I'll be able to apply a 30 AMP load to my motor without worrying about burning out the ESC, or popping a fuse!!!! That alone is the reason I'm shifting to brushless... Never saw a brushed solution capable of this.

    more from mtroniks.....

There is no need for a fuse although you can never have enough protection! We do advise fitting a fuse as a backup but this is up to you!

It will run at 30amp continuously or until it reaches its thermal cut off protection.

That is for the brushless one, right? It's too bad the brushed one isn't like that also. I can deal much better with reduced power over smoked electronics. I started running the 1000uf cap on mine to help with the sudden direction changes. Fast gun puts quite a strain on esc's.

Yeah, brushless. I hope it works out. Greg sent some technical questions yesterday to them, because he doesn't actually believe it can do what they say it can. Nor really can I... but if it is actually implemented, then I will never go back.

    AAAAAAANNNNNNNDDDDDD I PLAY FAST GUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How do you plan on using the telemetry unit?
Which spektrum are you using it with? I thought it was only offered with the pistol grip radio.

    >combat cruise this year?

I'll be out again this year. We'd have test runs while ice was on the water in Michigan. I don't think I'll be battling anyone; as I have no intention of getting wet in October.

    >using the telemetry unit?

I am using the DX6 for the boat. I plan on using the telemetry for testing purposes only. During a battle, I doubt I'll have much interest in RPM. So for testing, I see no reason why I can't bring my DX3; and leave it turned on in my backpack.

Moving forward, who knows? maybe if I get really ambitious I'll smoosh them together & make myself a 9 channel radio! :) ( j/k )

After I destroyed my original prop during seatrials; I ordered a "bismark prop' from strikemodels... not really thinking twice about what they would ultimately send me. When it came in the mail from stikemodels; I simply held it in my hand and laughed; I believe my words where "OMG; this must be some sort of joke... That can't fit on MY boat!"
So its been sitting on my shelf for a week while I tried to decide what to do with it. Strike of course offered to replace it free of charge with something smaller. But still; it was 'very tempting'; especially once Iceman said he is using something similar in his T. Finally tonight I decided I would stick with the really really big prop. 2" 5blade.
When I dig out the fiberglass to fill the hole under..err above the prop I will extend the bottom of the boat so it won't sit on the prop... It only hangs over like 1/8".

I heard of a new trick I wouldnt normally have tried because it didnt sound right. Instead of ordering a prop the right size to fit the ship, order one larger and then clip the tips off the blades. Obviously there is a middle ground here between being too big and clippping off too much. I never would have thought of that but people swear by it. I am going to try it the next time I order props.

I have to say that the 2 incher worked well last week although reverse is a dog...(I knew it would be) Speed was good and I was even a bit slow which meant I could shrink my drag discs a bit.
