In everyone's own opinion/ experience, do the home waterproofed ESCs hold up as well against water penetration as the off the shelf waterproof units?? Is it typical to Scothkote everything but the heat sinks? If the heat sinks were generally left uncoated I guess they would probably stay just as cool as an uncoated one.

that entirely depends on if you do it correctly. I have waterproofed my own components for years and most of the time am successful at it, but your mileage may vary.

as far as the heat sinks, you would want to be quite careful that where you stopped your coating will not peal back from the heat sink allowing water in. Also, if your esc is sitting so that there is water around the heat sink, a bit of skotchcoat will not hurt you.
