You're going to have to sand it off after peeling what you can off.

You have to waterproof the frame after you have it assembled so make sure the ribs are ready to accept West System Epoxy.
After the frame is assembled it is a pain to work on the ribs and clean them up.

So now is the time to make all clean and straight.

I agree... Elmers isn't the most "removal friendly" adhesive to use to apply the patterns. For future reference, I have had reasonable luck with glue sticks. If you glue a few at a time and them cut them out soon afterwards, it usually peels right off if you don't wait too long. Others have used a couple different forms of spray adhesive and seem to have had good results.

if you just leave it on and are using epoxy not varnish not a problem. if you remove it and leave the glue residue on it you need to remove it all. same for using varnish.

Does anyone use cardstock and just cut and trace the ribs onto the wood without having to glue it?

Tracing the lines on with carbon paper works well.
