My servos usually turn bout 60-70degrees, I set up the sodak to turn 1-1 ratio and full through is just about perfect. The micro servo may be different but it can't be much. Boomer, how many rudders you turning? I remember one and not much room to play back there. You might want to go control rod instead of gears.

You might want to try gear and sprocket to save the room and depending on the radio you might have some adjust ability there as well

Im asking what gear ratio to use for my rudder setup, as Chris provided me with many sizes. Like 1:2 or 3:2, i'd like an idea on the ratio.

How much does the servo turn? If it only turns 60 degrees I'd use a 3:1 ratio, 90 degrees 2:1. I have never looked at rudder gear ratios, its pretty easy to eyeball the right one or test a few out till you get the rudder throw you want. Whatever gives your rudders about 90 degrees swing in either direction, its easy enough to fine tune with endpoint adjustments.

I think he going with the DX5 Snipe, no endpoint adjustments.

In that case I wouldn't worry about it to much, use whatever gears will give you full throw in both directions and that will be plenty good.

You have to mock it up and see what works best. Anything else is farting in the wind and will probably be redone. Plug your radio, servo in, set the rudder in the shaft, pick out some gears and see how it all works.

On a standard servo without an adjustible end point radio the gears need to be 2:1 to get full throw in both directions.

I think he said he was going to use the Traxxis watertight servo, they have a 60 deg throw, so a 3:2 gear ratio is what he would need.

Of course with a single rudder ship, I don't think you are going to want to turn the rudder much past 60 deg anyways, maybe 70. If you do 90, your boat will pretty much come to a dead stop, not good around other ships. A 1.25:1 ratio is enough I would think, that would be 75 deg. On Rick's Scheer he never goes much past 70 deg, I helped him set his up.

I'm giving serious thought to picking up one of those servos and trying it as the rudder servo in my Belleau Wood.

The one that Snipe posted before from Tower hobbies is the about the same as far as I can tell, just a different color, but its a bit cheaper at Tower Hobbies. Its made by Hitec, has a Hitec spline. All the numbers on the units match up within a few ounces.

One of the Shortest Proportional Servos Available
High Torque for .60 size Models or .40 size Aerobatic Models
Single Top Ball Bearing for Smooth, Precise Output Control
Combination Metal/Resin Gear Train Provides Reliable Operation
    Watertight
Surface Mount Technology (SMT) Allows this Servo to be More Reliable in High-Vibration Environments.
$23.99, at bit cheaper than the Traxxis.
