Afternoon all! Just a Navy type here in Ottawa Ontario Canada, thought I'd share my build - my very first one at that, with you all. Hoping to get some input as I go along. I'm using rcengr's bogue plans. I finished the Tamiya 1:700, and this was the next size up. Though I don't plan on having it shot at, I'd like to have it mechanized. Photos 'thus far' to be posted shortly.
Ok so here we go. Unboxing The 1/4" goodness DE PLANES DE PLANES! Doors n' lights Cutting the subdeck to allow easier mild bending Assembling the subdeck All together Prepped for insertion (tee hee) Clamped and risers done, reinforcement done
Ok so before I start with the planking, I had a question about tipping. With all the extras I plan on putting on the top of the ship (doors, planes, people, glassing, lights, guns, etc), should I be worried about it tipping? underneath will simply be a servo, battery, ESC, and receiver. I don't know much about aircraft carriers, so some helpful suggestions would be welcomed.
Your going to have to ballast her down to the scale waterline. That should provide plenty of stability for your add-ons. FYI, a ship does not tip, it "lists"
get some lead shower pan liner material or the like (sheet lead). Glue it to the bottom. She will be rock stable.
Thanks guys - I will weigh her down some then for stability. Just started planking - and I ordered all my 1:144 guns/rafts/people today. Question: if I'm not competing, is there a reason why I wouldn't plank all the way to the subdeck?
If you're not building it as a combat ship, there's no need for "windows", so yes, plank 'er all the way up.
The only problem with planking all the way up under the plan of not battling is that if you do decide to come to the dark side, it would be a bit harder to convert her to a combat ship. I like to keep my options open Me personally, I would build it combat legal just to leave the door open - just my 2 cents.
With the amount of detail and extra expense there's no way in heck I'd let someone shoot at it. I'd make a second one for sure. btw planking sucks. Soaked the panels in water, superglue ajd/or carpenters glue, nothing worked to keep it on to my liking. It looked so pretty on rcengrs pdf I can't believe how bad I'm failing at it.
last bit on panelling. Took forever - soaking in water. Clamping, drying, gluing and clamping again....sucked but it's done. Wood filler and sanding next. Over 48 panels in total.
1:144 Nikki - the Revell kits are rereleased recently. The zvesda (spelling?) are the Fairey Battle (which are barracudas) and the revell microwings are wildcats.
