guys i need help, this spring break im going to try to scratch build a ship and i have a few questions. One, How much wood do you think i should buy.2, what ship should i build (Its 1/144 scale)and last how long do you think it should take. My tools are a circular saw, hand drill and a hand saw.
OMG! that's funny! ---> what monk (love the short nickname btw) meant was you will need some more power tools like power sander, scrollsaw, band saw, drill press, etc...
Really you get by with just a few tools. But it takes longer, and the results are not as nice. Check out craigslist or something for used tools. Often deals can be had. You will need a dremel tool, a saw that cuts curves (band, scroll, or jig) a drill (hand drill works but drill press is beter) You also need a place to work that won't mater if you get dusty, and covered in paint and glue dripping. Also take the time to visit with the local guys, see how it is done. This will save you lots of wasted effort.
if you are new and have not built before i would say start with a fiberglass hull. alot easier and cheeper. start simple.
Someobody correct me if any of the following doesn't coincide with recommended convention; otherwise, here's my list of what you should have on hand/available to build a ship: *hobby knife and #11 blades *sandpaper in various grits *scroll saw (or a coping saw for those seeking a challenge) *rotary tool (i.e. Dremel) *set of various bits for rotary tool *hand drill and a means to stabilize it reliably or a drill press *set of drill bits for the drill *hacksaw *flat work surface *drop cloth or lots of newspaper to contain the mess in your work area *soldering iron, solder, paste flux *dust mask (especially important if you start with a fiberglass hull) *pencil(s) *masking tape *straight edge (metal ruler recommended) It really doesn't take that many tools to have the capability to build every piece of a ship but there are many tools out there that certainly make things go much more quickly.
