Since no two ships are built alike, I think for small universal parts it would be beneficial to include the editable format or STEP file. This way designs can be tweeked without having to go through the mess of converting an STL to a solid and possibly wrecking geometry by deleting the subfaces.

I try to include the STEP file on my submissions for this very reason. That way someone could take the parts and customize them to suit their build style.

    Thoughts?

That really is the best way if you are ok with modifications to your work. I generally do that as well. Be aware though that you may not have that option depending on your modeling package
