I've been lurking here for a few months and just realized that I'd started posting in some of the other forums without having done an intro. Mea Culpa. Anyway, I'm in upstate NY and I thought this Hobby had died out before I could participate but, I'm glad to find that it hasn't : ) I've been doing RC cars and trucks for a while now and printing 3d parts for them. I've just signed up for the Battle for Ming's Moat and I'd love to have a ship to run. I've been reading up as much as I can and started drawing up a Protected Cruiser for the Steampunk Flotilla because, I think that would be fun. I may have to postpone that for a while though, so that I can concentrate on fastgun, which seems to be what people close to me are doing. Does anyone know if there are any used ships for sale in the North East that one could use as a starting point? Thanks -Xanthar
Welcome, Xanthar! If this is still available, which it says it is, it would be a good starter ship. https://rcwarshipcombat.com/threads/525-takes-all-heavy-cruiser-radio-many-parts-first-come.444538/
Thank You, Beaver. I saw that posting and sent an email inquiring about it last night : ) That would be huge head start. I see in your sig that you've got a Suffren. I've been reading that it makes a good starter ship. Do you agree with that? I just placed an order for plans of it. Do you have any pics or hints for someone wanting to build a Suffren?
Emailed about one of the ships he had for sale over a month ago, never got a reply, hopefully you will have better luck.
I do have a French cruiser Edgar Quinet I could be talked out of if you're interested. Has drive system, speed control, pump, and steering. Just needs radio, batteries, and guns to be combat ready.
You might check out my build thread. It's long, but full of good info for a beginner. https://rcwarshipcombat.com/threads/suffren-build.443108/
Welcome Xanthar! Good to see another NY captain. Cruisers are nice to get started with but by season 2 it has been my experience that a captain is looking for a boat with a few more units. I would not rule out a 4 unit Battlecruiser or battleship if you come across one. A Von Der Tann, Iron Duke or Invincible are big favorites in this class. Whatever you pick up there is plenty of help here and on the IRCWCC yahoo forum. A lot of guys on there do not check this forum. Bring whatever you have, finished or unfinished to Ming's Moat in May and there will be plenty of people to help get you on the right track. One other thought, a used boat may need nearly as much time and effort to get into battle shape as a new complete kit from BC or Strike. It sounds like you are an experienced builder so it looks like your options are open. See you in May! Barry
Ping and Pong, he is coming to the next battle so there will be plenty of show and tell. Hey Xanthar if you want to see stuff at the Moat before let me know, by any chance are you a student at RPI (you sound like one)?
I am an RPI alumnus. I'm curious what gave that away? And yes, I would love to see stuff at the Moat : )
