U571, the reason we don't use subs more often is because of how difficult they are to build. Some of the top boat-builders in my club have attempted submarines, and none of them has gotten one working reliably yet. With more modern submarine technology, such as micro servos and pre-built ballast tanks, it's probably easier now, but there's still so much MORE that can go wrong on a submarine than on a surface ship, and Murphy's Law has a way of rearing its ugly head at the worst possible moments.
You guys might enjoy seeing some of the coverage we got from the Maker Faire. You'll have to put up with 3 minutes of other robot combat before you get to the best part of the video. http://www.boingboing.net/2008/05/09/bbtv-combat-robots-w.html "We'll teach you how to do it, we'll teach you how to build a ship, we'll help you in any way we can so we can get you out here and sink you." Ain't that the truth.
thats a sweet pond setup we wanted to do that down at our local model show in canberra but we never thought that it would be possible feasiblly. if you know and dont mind me asking do you have an approximate cost
[]WOW. Excellent!!! This is exactly what I was trying to get going and set up for NABS. Glad to hear it went well. With the details on the prep and setup this will be very helpful for me for our farm fair here next year. ADM STOKOMOTO
I think this is just the type of thing many clubs were looking for for demo's and such, it can be adapted to any size, plastic liners or tarps are easy enough to get as is some 2"x12"x(what-ever length)lumber and some metal braces for corners. It could be a solution for clubs without a pond also if they have a site where they can make a pond by digging a hole and using the same liner technique to male one temporarily and moving it would never be a issue. I am toying with the idea of something like this on my lawn (it means I wouldn't have to mow it)and there is nothing like sitting on the deck with some friends and having a battle, no? This could be a way to ensure we have a flow of new members with more accessible demos to a larger cross section of the public. Sounds exciting and fun, thanks again for the info. [:0]
