So what's a good lighting setup for night battle? I've got this whisper quiet low freeboard dreadnought and thought it might be fun to mix it up after the sun goes down.
I've always been partial to a few LEDs, red on the left, green on the right, and then something at the bow and stern. Nothing to complex or bright, just enough for navigation. Put them on a switch so you can go dark when you need to. That setup has always worked well for me.
Place an LED for the bow/stern so you can see your boat, then a nice big one on the haymaker turret so you can see your hits. Of course, switches for both. Last year there was use of blacklight paint which was cool to see
Always make sure you can turn the lights off. Several people have has lights that are always on, they always become a target everyone can always see. When you turn off your light make sure it's not also turning off something important like your pump. Getting shot up then wanting to run away and hide is hard with your lights on and having your pump off is always a bad idea. Don't make your lights so big the off set the balance of your ship. A car headlight sounds like a good idea until it falls off your ship and drags the stern under. Don't make your lights have so much current draw that they pull power from your pump and guns. This can be an issue on small ships with small batteries. At night battle be ready for bad things to happen. More bad things happen at night battle than normal battles.
Already figured that one out. Just ordered a dual circuit latching RC switch. One channel to operate the navigation LED's, the other for something I'm calling Project Deathray. https://www.mr-rcworld.co.uk/shop/dual-latching-relay-switch/
Is that like the aircraft landing light that Carl had on his Musashi one year? So bright both sides beg to have it turned out?
Deathray is a black op's project of TyngTech International. Information on system capabilities will be disseminated to participating Allied captains 30 minutes before the night battle.
Mexican dinner for allied captains, TyngTech International to supply gas masks to said allied captains.
Night battles are very interesting and fun. You will get a lot of friendly fire plus rams and as for lighting I liked none.
Let me tell you a story about night battle many years ago....... Carl, in 1984 nats (I think) had rigged a novel device on his ship for night battle called the "nuclear flash". He told his fellow Axis (the side he was on) that when they heard a loud click, look away from the pond. The device was a set of camera flash cubes set to go off by relay. So the time had arrived and Carl activated the device!!!! The Axis curious what Carl had planned did not look away and were blinded! The Allied captains with a heavy growth of trees behind them heard the echo of the click behind them and turned toward the trees to see what occurred there and saw only the reflection of the flash and were not blinded. So ended the story of the "nuclear flash"!
