Are there any paints to avoid using for new construction? I went through about a dozen threads and didn't find anything about brands or types of paint to use. Is exterior latex alright? Sorry if it sounds dumb, but I do want to get it right and there are plenty of choices.

People have been having issue'a with the drop test when using exterior latex paints. The spray enamels seem to work best.

NEVER use Rust-ol lem!!! However it is spelled!! It seems to turn into some sort of vinyl.

Regular latex paint in the little sample jars from home Depot/lowes has always worked great for me. Get any color you want to.

I'd stay away from liquid enamel paint.

Spray paint seems to work fine to.

I paint mine with craft acrylic. Works well and doesn't make a hardened skin. Been meaning to try @SnipeHunter's suggestion.

Any color you want and flat will not add strength. I have been using it four years now. Just spray a clear coat and it will wipe down.

Thank you one and all. I've got several options already from what was listed, so I should be all set. I've been buying small sample paint at the local hardware store for the last year or so from the goof shelf of discount paint. Mixing should get me the colors I need.

In the early days of NABS a Northampton skipper painted his ship with an epoxy based paint. Took us a while to figure out why we weren't able to get any penetrating hits on it!
