I want something to stick on a bulletin board or hand out. This is a first attempt. Trying out fonts and themes, pictures. The sinking is a screen grab from Caleb's videos. One of my favorites. The quote is adapted from the Commodore. Come for the boat's, stay for the friendships.
No I did not. Thought I was covered as I am not gonna sell the advertisement and it will bring new people to the hobby. As stated this is a first attempt. One of the photos is posted by you here on the forums, the Lexington and NC and the radio in the back. Should I delete?
While I appreciate your enthusiasm, I personally don't want my email blasted publicly like on an advertisement/banner. Lots of bots are on these forums, which is why most of your personal info is hidden behind requiring an account. People without accounts can see posts like this and their attachments.
In general it's considered good policy to get permission before using other people's content for published work. I have no problem with what you have there but in the future a simple inquiry would be appreciated.
Like I said it's a first attempt, I deleted the image. Uploaded a new version. Appreciate the feedback. Removed the Commodores adapted quote, and all pictures not mine.
If anyone has beauty shots of their boats or construction photos or even battle photos. Please post here or msg me. I can't be the only person in the hobby that's ever had a person come up to them and ask about the boats. This is just a handout to help them find the hobby. Well maybe with imput and a few more revisions.
Like I said, I'm ok with you using those images. Ive always tried to provide as much content for the hobby as I can over the years which I'm sure you've seen. Getting a little recognition and permission for the effort is appreciated.
Honestly till yesterday didn't know that you, with the videos and beaver were one in the same. You're YouTube videos are immensely important to me. Scale Ship Modeler was how I first found the hobby in the mid 1990's. Every article on the magnificent obsession was a delight. By the early 2000's I had a boat and was in the hobby. Your videos and the videos made by others made we want to rejoin the hobby. Took my boats out of storage and here I am. Thank you for everything you do. It's great now I can put beauty and the beast, that's your Lexington and NC picture back on my handout. Thanks. A question please, Do you think I need to get permission from the suppliers to list them? BC doesn't reply to emails.
Just point people to the forums. It is easier than sending someone to a vendor, them buying all the wrong things, not being able to figure out how to build a boat, and give up.
I understand what your saying. Me personally it was swampworks mfg that got me excited for the hobby. Didn't understand everything, just looked at the hulls and wondered what that would be like.
I was the same. Bought an Iowa hull from Australia. It was only after that arrived I really started looking in to how to build a boat and realized how far out in the deep-end I really was with that boat…
Still is. It sits on the top rack of my boat wall as a reminder to not let ambition overshadow reality. A huge boat for a first build is a terrible idea. Had to relearn that with Bismarck too. I was building it for big gun. This was in.. maybe 2005 or 2006. My father and I worked on it for about a year before giving up trying to figure out how to build big gun canons. This was back when the forum was still on RCUniverse and there was not a lot of info about how to build working guns. Or at least it felt like a trade secret. Then in early 2014 I bought a CNC router and made ribs in Solidworks. The CNC had so many issues because I had NO idea what I was doing. Cut to the summer of 2016 and I bought a CR10 3D printer. I converted the ribs to 3d models for printing and attempted to make a rib and keel printed boat. I failed. But yes, the Iowa was my first attempt at building a boat.
Since this will be a handout, given away at the pond. I can introduce myself, give my email or mobile number if the person is really interested. New people get a very kind welcome here on the forum and there is tremendous knowledge here just for the asking. Unfortunately it gets toxic here. No mercy for the weak. I just remind myself this forum is not the hobby. The real hobby is the friendships made over the years and the boats.
The forum is a mixed bag. The overwhelming majority of veteran captains in the hobby never come on here; or do extremely rarely. There is a very small minority of captains on this forum who actually battle, regularly, in the IRCWCC. Off the top of my head, I think maybe 10 or less. Considering IRCWCC is the single largest club/format of "model warship combat", that is saying something about population percentages on this forum. 10 actual experienced builder captains from the single largest club vs 3200~ registered accounts on here. There's a lot of information here, both good and bad, and the real trick is figuring out how to decipher what is good and what is bad. That is when the physical meeting of a potential rookie to a local veteran needs to happen, to create the filter to help screen out all the uneducated/bad information out here. Any "toxicity" is because we veterans know 99.99% of the people on this forum will never build or battle a boat at a legitimate event, and have no business trying to advise/help potential new people.
Your not kidding about the bad information part. Strike Models is still listed as a vendor on Ircwcc. Model ships ahoy is not there. Maybe a link to your thread on the 3d print boats here needs to be there. Just a suggestion.
