I was thinking about that but I just can't see how a single stern is anything but useless on this ship, which lead me to the off-axis stern and sidemounts.... we will see
A single stern isnt the best gun, but it is an easy gun to learn how to use. You said beginner and that's how I would recommend a beginner to set her up. Unless the stern is a lot taller than she looks, a single stern is still a dangerous weapon to defend with. Now a more experienced captain will want something else but a heavy sidemount armament tends to get new captains into trouble until they learn the ropes a bit.
The single stern gun...That is a very useful information for the newbie like me. Thanks for this tip ! It is information that I will use for the first boat I want to build. MMJR
Its hard to tell from the pic but did you model/mount two port side guns or is that a bow gun in B turret?
Guns are not locked in position yet nor have the tiedowns been designed. For the prototype build I am trying to plan in variable mount locations. I will probably set two stern sidemounts as their position is just too good, which leaves an orphan gun The orphan is 14 degrees off the bow (so still a bow gun, technically) and actually hits the waterline in the general vicinity of where a North Carolina or other large ships bow will be when their bow sidemounts can engage the waterline of the Provence in the bow region.
First pass of the laid out DXF has been sent to stephen. if they check out the first parts will get cut! Superstructure to come after hull verification.
It is also a test of stephen's setup vs my other laser cutter's setup. Hopefully the answer is "not much change required" because it will make moving parts to him easier. After I know he is GTG on these, it is time to look at a 1/96 upscale of the littorio, and transitioning littorio plans to him
Sounds good. It'll be nice to get some SS with the Provence kit, really looking forward to seeing the final results.
there will be a superstructure. but I would rather get the hull proto sorted out as far as internal component and cannon mounts first. Super can come rapidly after that (there isn't much super anyways)
I know, I was just happy that there would be one less thing to do. My Gneisenau ran around for over a year without SS because I hate doing that part.
Wonder how printable the turrets are. Got any hollowed-out models of them, with say a 6 or 7mm thick wall?
I am surprised that you did not already have a batch of turrets printed and field tested by now von Tugboat!
Turrets are rather small. A 6-7mm wiall and cannons won't fit. I will have to see how cannon mounting will fit and where the turret needs to be thinner.
Thinnest that'll take fire is 3mm, and that's with a slope to it. On the other hand, I could print one solid at a very thin layer height for good appearance and get Grey Wolf Squadron to cast turrets, although young master Greg would need to talk to them about licensing But I'm willing to print a plug for a good cause.
