I'm planning to knock out the last two parts into 2D .dxfs tonight which would wrap-up the rest of the hull. I'll post here when I upload the last file. As for the superstructure, I may have to put that off a couple weeks since it appears that real life is going to be interjecting for a little bit.
Ok, sounds great. At the rate I'm going wih my project, you may be done with the superstructure before I'm ready Seems like I take a step ahead and three backwards.... and yes, that real life thing keeps interfering with me too!!!
The last two parts are drafted-up and in the same folder of the file manager as the other parts in both .dxf and .pdf files.
Let me just double-check on who'll be involved in the initial buildability prove-out. We have: *Cannonman *Kotori/Gascan Is there anybody else out there willing/able to be a guinea pig whose name/handle I should add to the list?
As long as you don't make so much noise as to keep the baby awake, I'd say building a ship would be the perfect side project to take on while taking advantage of any available family leave allotted for the newcomer to the family. So now we have: *Cannonman *Kotori/Gascan *Mike Horne
The DXFs look awesome, Nice work Webwookie!!! I am nearly (I think) finished with the CAD work on my Iowa hull, so hopefully I will be able to cut both hull sets at once. This weekend may not be a realistic goal, but I'm pretty sure I can get it done by the following weekend. Does anyone know of a national type chain store that may carry the required plywood that would be acceptable quality/ price?? My hope is to be able to pick some up locally, without having to order it. The Menards near us has 1/4 Baltic Birch (I think it was 5 ply, but 2 of them may have been the veneer facing, I don't remember), but I didn't see any 1/8 or 3/8 (I need the 3/8 for my Iowa). I haven't been blessed with a bunch of time to hunt around lately, so maybe I'll come across something. Another question.... Is anyone working on the mechanical end of this project yet?? I guess I'm wondering what the ultimate goal is. Is the goal to offer a kit consisting of a pre cut "hull kit", and the necessary mechanical components to get it water/ battle ready, or a "hull kit" with recomendations on which mechanical components to use, or just a set of CAD drawings + directions, or somewhere in between??
My local MICHAEL'S craft store has a selection of plywood, although it may not be long enough for your needs. Also, most hobby shops carry a selection of aircraft-grade plywood. If none of that is any help, then I guess you'll have to go online. About the mechanicals: We've been slowly figuring out what would be a good idea to include. The problem is, we won't know for certain what props, motors, batteries, etc. will get the cruiser up to Fast Gun speeds. And we won't know for certain until either we build one and test it, or someone who HAS built one steps forward and volunteers some info. Big Gun speeds are slower, and won't be a problem if you can reach Fast Gun speeds. As for armament, gas, and pump, I was thinking BC standard would do the trick. No sense going anywhere else when you can get such high-quality stuff right there. Big Gun may desire different pumps, though, for better efficiency, etc.
I guess my previous post this morning disappeared with the server switch-over. In case anybody missed it, here's the short version of the overall end goals to the rookie ship development program: 1. Creation and dissemination of comprehensive information documenting the entire design 2. Creating a design that results in a straightforward build suitable for any captain, experienced or otherwise. 3. Providing the means by which local vendors can manufactuer a parts or a kit of parts from which the construction of the design can be easily executed.
Kotori, have you received the couple of e-mails I sent to you over the past couple of days? One is fairly large and should be difficult to miss; it has some hull CAD data so that you can reference that directly for any sort of packaging/fit checks that you may want to try before building physical parts.
I did stop by Michael's craft store today. You were absolutley right Kotori. They had what looked to be a real nice quality plywood, however the pieces were quite small. I guess I'll have to look into ordering some[] I'll start with the link Mark posted first. Anyone else have any other suggestions/ suppliers to try??
I ordered the 1/8 in. baltic birch today. 1/4 is available locally, will pickup this weekend. If I understand correctly, everything on the 2 rib sheets and 1 keel sheet are to be cut from 1/4", and the decks are to be cut from 1/8".... Is this right??
Ok, Just got a tracking # for the 1/8 inch, should be here Monday. I picked up the 1/4 last weekend, so as soon as the 1/8 is here it's go time. WOOOO Hooo!![]
Yes, it is good news!! I'm looking forward to getting going. I am however a little worried about them cutting the piece correctly for shipping. I ordered a 60" x 60" piece and asked for them to cut it into (6) 12" x 48" pieces, and (1) 12" x 12" piece. I can get all 1/8" thick pieces out of a 12" x 48" piece, which gives me enough for 6 sets (all spoken for). I just hope they figure it out right, there was no where to draw a pic. on the order form, just a small amount of text[?][?]
