Hey guys, working on Bart in the garage to prep for NATs. Have the shopcam setup and am streaming over on the discord channel. https://discord.gg/63eBX5qH -WT
Can't jump on right but can you do more this? Its a great idea. I think it gives people an idea what "working" on a boat looks like. For those of use who don't already know.
I need a better setup for the camera, right now its a wooden dowel clamped to my laptop haha but sure I could see about doing maybe like a every other week shopcam session.
Gangbusters! Looking forward to it. Have you tried doing the video through your phone or tablet? Might be easier to place.
I have, the issue is getting a good "workbench" perspective. If we wanna do this semi regularly, I'll go through the effort to setup OBS and actually mount a few of the C270 webcams that I've taken home from work (they're surplus/trash from the COVID days). That way theres decent views of my two workstations + me/anyone else who's in the shop. The other issue is timezones, I'm EST and you're the other coast so if I start at 9pm you'll be joining at dinner time basically. But, I could probably do something like every other friday night or something like that. I know the Hayes-Andrews shipyard in Maryland regularly meets up on Friday evenings, and I've already talked with Steve about gifting him a minipc I have laying around that he could set up with his shop TV and one of these surplus webcams. Let me know what works for the public, everyone feel free to chime in.
Hey all, Going to do the first official SJS GarageStream this friday 7/12/24 starting at 7PM EST. I beefed up my networking in the garage to a steady 300mbps, got a nice overhead mounted workbench cam, and have figured out how to use OBS to composite the overhead cam and the facecam together so you can see me AND what I'm working on. Feel free to join in. -WT
First garage stream was a fun little event. I have some bugs to work out on the multiple camera stream but otherwise had a great little conversation about proper battery care and maintenance. Next session will be Friday 7/26, once again starting around 7~ PM EST.
Hey all, Tonight's shopcam session is postponed. We will start fresh in August. Had a rough week at work and came home to basically go straight to bed. See you all next Friday. -WT
Hi all, I am online and streaming for tonights shopcam session. Will hang out until 9:30-45 EST if nobody hops on I'll call it a night. Not really working on much except cleaning, but can provide boat advice and discuss builds etc.
Hi all, This weekend there will be some building sessions at SJS. I hope to have the webcams up + mics hot for most of Saturday and Sunday, check out the discord for info.
Hi all, cameras were live for most of the day. Yesterday. Will be live for most of the day today. This is your chance to ask your questions about building cannons, general ship stuff, etc. Yesterday built 4 cannons from base parts up to functioning interrupters and breeches. Today need to finish them and get them in the boat, but may need to make more for another captain who'll be visiting for the build weekend. So, perfect opportunity to get some cannon knowledge if you need it. Also will be working more on SMS Mackensen and other ships.
Will, this is George. Your video explaining how to make a Foster Breech cannon for FG was very thorough. I'd need to purchase a workbench, a drill, the bit to grind out the elbow, a soldering gun, a file and a round file, just to get started trying to make my own cannons. I'd also have to get lucky with the machining, drilling and soldering operations. Am not confident I could make a working cannon on my first, second or third try. Are you test firing the cannons, once you finish them? How do I connect to your Discord server? I'd like to watch/listen in when you're in the shop. BTW, does the video mention that IRCWCC requires gun barrels have holes drilled in them, so that cotter pins can be used to secure the barrel?
I don't think the video I made those years ago goes into the details of needing gun pins, but that's a clearly spelled out requirement in the IRCWCC rules book whereas the IRCWCC rules don't detail how to build a cannon. Yes I test fire the cannons, until you've proven the gun fires reliably you haven't built anything. If you don't have a workbench, drill, soldering torch, set of files....you need to acquire them. Not sure how you could participate in a hobby that requires building and maintaining these complicated RC machines without basic tools and a place to use them. New people are best off working with a veteran captain when possible to learn some of these skills. Pipe soldering for cannons, electrical soldering for electrical components, the other parts of cannon making, etc.
