Welcome to RC Warship Combat! Say what? It's totally doable, just not really worth it for the space/weight/time/cost etc, same as a submarine. ;-) If you want to build a system go for it but it really isnt necessary. People tend to follow KISS a lot, with good reason, there are a ton of things that can go wrong in combat and reliability can be a huge factor in battle. Extra systems and stuff often are looked down upon as unnecessary failure points, etc. Anything over about 5-6' is deep for us. Sinks (actually sinking, not floating below the surface) are a big part of the hobby so it greatly limits where we can battle, also most shallow ponds arent big enough for waves to be a big factor unless the wind kicks up. Losing boats is very rare. One of the main points if not the main point of this hobby is to sink the ships. Foam and other buoyant materials are used but the goal is ships that sink, anything that prevents/impedes that (or even could appear to) can get a lot of scorn and likely rules against it. Ships settling in the water becomes important as holes that were above the water become below the water and all that. If you dont want your boat to sink, that's kinda what we do...sooo....not sure what to tell you. #InTheory In the real world it's not that straight forward. Pond water density varies noticeably from pond to pond, heck it can even vary day to day in the same pond. Ship weight can change significantly throughout the course of a sortie/battle/day. Without knowing the state of the pond and the ship at the time of any particular sinking a priori that problem gets tough quickly. (Solvable, but again time/money/effort/etc.) It's your hobby time/dollar, do whatever "crazy" projects you want. If they are legal for combat, great, use them If they arent, please dont bring them, If they are and they shouldn't be, dont worry, they'll get banned. (some view that as a badge of honor)
It was a retrofit and has never been very good at popping out and drawing the line. Up until last year when we started using this new pond, that didn't really matter much, most of our ponds had holes, but were typically possessing of shallows large enough and with clear enough water that you could usually easily see and recover your ship. This new pond, the water drops off from shore fairly fast down to about 3-4feet (depends on the local river influencing the water table) and has 8+ft deep pockets, and tends to be less clear.
Well technically, it did sink completely after Andy drove over it! View: https://youtu.be/PuzSR7L7qTA
Ah, alrighty. That makes sense. Planning on a refit to deal with the change? I'm glad I've got a 16 foot rescue cord on my Texas right now. It'll come in handy at Saranac next month, but for most of the local stuff in Northern WI it's overkill. I recently managed to find a cove on one of the local lakes that's consistently 2-3 feet deep, so once I get the blessing from my ranger district's Rec department, I'll see about getting the site certed with NAMBA
I might try a different bobber at some point, but no major plan to alter it until I rip the entire ship apart and rebuild it.
Are you going to retain the "Angry Disgruntled Junkyard Dog" Aesthetic when you do that refit? Also, with the new rule change, are you considering dropping the bow sidemount to a half unit and putting in a 1 unit pump?
cool, well hopefully things work out at some point and we can get PPB and GLAS to meet up and have a shootout on the Chequamegon
I installed my Derf float in the bow deck . I bolted to the frame the water/ air pressure helps unseat it when she goes down stern first. I can recover it with the cord.
You need site insurance if you want any insurance at all. The individual insurance is only in effect at insured ponds. So no site insurance then no insurance at all in any form through Namba. It’s 50 bucks... get it. Battles Have nothing to do with it.
Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, N.,S. Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, have no insured sites
Surprising to see Minnesota on your list, I was told the other year that you had to have an insured site to have a sanctioned battle. Is PPB not hosting this year?
I'm pretty sure PPB has an insured site in Chanhassen MN. I mean, I don't know any of the paperwork details, but it's where PPB battles and they do all of the due diligence stuff when checking NAMBA membership etc at the events. So I assume everything's kosher. I spoke with Bob, Tyler et al. at PPB and the objective is to get a good NAMBA lake in Northern WI for other events/regional stuff, etc. I've been slowly assembling Bathymetry data and looking at sites here over the past few months/ talking with my Rec department about which lakes would be legally okay for battling (turns out that USFS has a thing about shooting guns near boat launches, so I am going to bring in my Texas and let them have a look as part of getting the thumbs up).
