What's going on all , So I've been out of it for a while and I see that a lot of you folks are using lipo battery's and motors . I have an Iowa right now with Johnson 970s direct drive and run an 18 amp hour battery for everything , Im redoing the whole ship and was wondering if it worth changing over to lipo batts and out runner motors and if it is what size battery's and motors would you folks recommend Thanks John

Hey John, good to see you back. You probably don't remember me, but I remember meeting you at a battle or two in Conron back in 2004-2005ish, I was a teenager then with an Espana, I remember the Iowa being pretty awesome back then.

There's still pretty good representation of the core group. Carl's got a house with a pond, Plato checks in time to time, Marty, Steve, Tommy, Nate, Rick Schultz is back active, Bob, Dave stops by the Maryland battles, Rob arena (joined same year i did), and several others I'm probably forgetting.

For your question, the batteries than most people use now are LiFePO4, or "LiFe." The costs powering a big ship can add up, you could probably do fine in the Iowa with lead acid since there is weight to spare. I have about 10 pounds of weights in mine to get it down. Are you planning for two or one pump? We can change batteries out now between sorties

If you wanted to look into LiFe's, here are the two most common versions people use. As I said the costs add up, performance is good, big impact on small-medium boats

    20Ah 'Brick' https://www.batteryspace.com/lifepo...h-10c-rate-64-wh-6-0---un38-3-passed-dgr.aspx
    40Av "Brick" https://www.batteryspace.com/lifepo...ah-10c-rate-128-wh-----un38-3-passed-dgr.aspx
    15Ah Cylinder https://www.batteryspace.com/LiFePO...150ASurge-Rate-48Wh-with-6M-screw-Termin.aspx

I would say stick with brushed motors, they do just fine on the big boats. If I was going to start my Iowa over again I would use 750's or 775's at 12V or more, direct drive or geared if I wanted.

Here is a link to my build thread. We have gone overboard with airflow to guns, it kicks up a lot of water, makes the same BB holes. I changed some stuff around since those pictures were taken.

I have plenty of 970 motors in 12 volt windings if you need.

Kevin I do remember meeting you , funny how I remember things 10 plus years ago buy last week's a fog LOL . thanks for the heads up on the battery swaps between sorties I need to get caught up on things, thanks for the info on the battery's I will have to decide if its worth changing everything over , but I have like 5 18amp hr battery's maybe I'm better off staying SLA .

Carl, its been a long time how you been, I see you've moved to a place with a pond , very nice place you've got there.
