Curt, I'm sending Stephen a link to this thread and letting him know of your confusion. Trying to do this before you say "I do" and she says "No you don't" to all of your projects? =] Best wishes on the wedding. We got married 11 years ago, and I am really glad to have all of that planning behind me.
A liittle more work was done today. Trying to get at it more often. Ok this shot looks the same but actually the little section on top is a new piece after I messed up the previous section . I was trying to angle it more towards the top then round it more on the corners. I think the section here is a cylinder. Oh well maybe it will get shot off and I can make a new one. Below pic. This section here the radar is attached and the director is attached to it's post. The AA gun tub has the correct shape now. The side columuns near the forward stack are attached with the gun director attached. The [The secondary 5 in guns are in place. They sit on a brass post and can rotate in either direction. Very nice looking indeed. I didn't know you folks had a pair of these beauties building. SWEEEEET! Mikey
Thanks Mikey. The Iowa was quite ahead of the Mo at the start of the build. Now the Mo is ahead. Iowa will catch up soon. We're trying to have both launched and running simultaneoulsy. Iowa will have it's cannons in place long before MO. Mo won't get her cannons till sometime in 2012.
Very cool! Who is building the other one? And did I see that you were planning to attend the 2012 IRCWCC nats? Mikey
Thanks froggy. Tom Cromwell is building the IOWA. The plan is to have Tom and I attend IRCWCC NATS in 2012. We'll both bring down IOWA and MISSOURI to lend a helping hand to the Allied cause because the pairs of Yamatos and Bismarck's and all those nasty little swarm ships are just too much for the North Carolina's and Sodaks. Now if the rules would allow the Monatana to join in that would be awesome.
Curt, where are your plans from? I downloaded the shipyard plans from the USS Missouri website, they're in pdf and not to our scale, but you can print and enlarge easily enough, and it's hard to get more authoritative plans...
I got the pdf plans too and I was looking at them after having issues with some of the drawings on the plans I got with my kit from Strike. I sorted it out afterward. Some errors too late to correct but not really noticeable on the scheme of things. I try to be as accurate as possible Some sections I was picky and others I let go. See I had intended to make this a runner only but someone convinced me to build it for Nats. So part of me is trying to model it more and the other part is saying leave it it will get shot off anyway. I'm kinda of a hybrid builder I guess. With that said I was using the plans today to get the bridge built up correctly. It's turning out nice so far. More work after it's painted. I started adding supports to the levels so that I can attach my rails. I was working on my secondaries today. I am using as many references as possible to bring the model as close I can get it in semi scale form.
Work on the main bridge was done today. The corners and edges need filing down. Window frames them selves will be installed after the superstructure is painted. Starboard side profile. It's starting to take shape. Bows on view. Stern view.
Who says that this Forum isn't helpful? Thanks to Tom Cromwell's Eagle Eyes he spotted a big mistake on the contorl tower at the uppermost platform. I apparently had placed it backwards... DOH!. Well it didn't take me long to correct that major blunder. How could I have missed that? Oh yeah, wedding preparations.
Did some more work this time other than the boo boo I made on the conning tower platform, I drilled out holes in the 5 in secondaries and inserted the barrels. 2 more to do. That's better. The platform is facing the right direction this time. I had to hacksaw the first platform off and it came apart trying to pry off the director. So I had to make another platform. Thank to Tom Cromwell's keen eye in pointing out my blunder. The barrels were installed. Ready against enemy air attacks. Tom was working on the "Foot" of the forward part of the superstructure. Tom hard at work. Needless to say Tom also had issues with the drawings of that section.
Curt, the photos are great!! and She's coming out good!! but she's going to be a heavy little bugger!! Nikki
The little square platforms that the 5 inchers sit atop of also seem tohave different dimensions depending on the profile you decide to measure from on the plans. The side profile I got 1 1/4 in width yet the top profile only 1 in. I was measuring from the top but the blocks seem to be a little undersized comparde to the termite secondary. Oh well I can correct it.
Would the Navy drawing of a proposed camo scheme offer any help on the superstructure layout, or have you already seen this one? It's hyperlinked to the full image (nice and large) at http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/images/g100000/g109730.jpg.
I saw that and have been using that too. It helps alittle but the PDF is much better. This one though you can see how the foam could be measured up against it and in future I would recommend using this one as well. Thanks for pointing that one out also Keri.
Here's an impressive photo from the recent past of when the Mo was last pulled out for drydock. http://eugeneleeslover.com/USS_Missouri_Drydock2.html
