Despite m y own preferences, and all the Americans who go on and on about how the Missouri is the most amazing...etc..etc.. The most popular ship is the Bismark as far as common folk would understand. I think HMS Hood might be a close second.

I have asked a number of civilians to name a battleship.
Nine out of ten could not name a single ship!
My wife could only name one and that was only because it was part of her studies for her citizenship.
The few answers I received were:
    Arizona, Titanic and the Maine.

...if the Titanic had a battleship's armor (especially the torpedo belt!), she wouldn't be famous at all, since "struck iceberg, passengers enjoyed lemon slushies for rest of trip to New York" would hardly have written her into the histories.

I would say in the US, Arizona comes up a lot. In Britain, Hood. Bismarck is popular regardless, but I wouldn't want to be famous for getting pounded to death by a bunch of Brits. (well, by a bunch of anyone, really :)

I think you have to look at time periods to answer this question also. Yes most everyone knows of Bismark and Hood. If you look at the ww2 war films and newspapers another name comes to light , look up battleship x, and see what was wrote about her! You will be surprised to find out what ship this is.

I'm still of the mindset that if your were to name a few ships to the average American, you would *probably* find that most have heard of USS Arizona, Bismarck would likely be very well heard of also. I think that between her and Bismarck would be the most likely to get an answer of "I've heard of that one", at least from the typical person. It seems unlikely that if you asked about Missouri that you would get as many positive responses. I know even as a kid I knew of Arizona and Bismarck, I had never really heard of Missouri or Iowa or Hood before I became involved in this hobby. I also think a lot of the older folks might "remember the Maine" so to speak. I don't necessarily think the average Joe would have any of these on the tip of their tongue if asked to name a battleship, but most would recall the names if offered to them.

My Vote is on Bismarck first, then Hood, then Yamato. In that order.

The fastest running ship in the world, great reverse too. Don't mind the flag it was over-bleached.

My vote for the most famous battleship would be the USS Arizona. anybody traveling to Honolulu would know of the Arizona from it's memorial at Pearl Harbor. With thousands of visitors a year makes it #1 as far as the most famous ship sunk on the day that will live infamy December 11, 1941

    December ELEVENTH?

Methinks you have our two infamous occasions mixed together.... December 7, 1941 and September 11, 2001.
