Two ships with similar names, but why is the south almost twice the size of the North. And how many battle units is it?

The South Carolina? BB-26? She was a Pre-Dreadnought, nowhere near the size of North Carolina...

The South Dakota was the ship class built after the NC's, and it is actually slower, with the same guns. She does turn better, though.

SoDak and NoCar are both 6 unit battleships.

I think you got that backwards the south is much smaller than the north they were very different ships the NC was a WW2 BB and the SC was a WW1 dreadnought

P3: use the warship registry to find out ship info... it would probably be easier on you. Also, wikipedia is a great resource.

Create yourself an excel sheet of all the ships that interest you and list their specs... This will help you decide, and not run around in a circle.
