I've been working on machine vision for a robotics competition called Defcon. The goal is to build a robot that can autonomously acquire, track targets and shoot down targets. I'm using a webcam and OpenCV, a vision algorithm toolbox for C++ and a Freescale I/O board to control a pan/tilt mount from my laptop. I'm using vision on another robot for navigation but I'm still trying to find a cheap camera that doesn't get saturated in bright sunlight.

I also purchased an awesome laser range finder that I'm working on hacking to get the output to a microprocessor. http://boschtools.com/Products/Tools/Pages/BoschProductDetail.aspx?pid=DLR165K
    It has a 165ft Range +-1/16".

I'll post more details when I get time.

It's almost ready, I had to switch to a better servo controller and a better camera. The one I had was only 8bit so it wasn't very precise. I've ordered a 12bit and I've switched to a camcorder instead of a webcam.

It's allowed in NTXBG under R&D which gets a bit of oversight. Even so, the rangefinder can't be directly coupled to the weapons systems.

    Code:
    NTXBG Rules of Construction:
    IX OTHER SHIPBOARD SYSTEMS
    C. Aiming devices to simulate radar are allowed under R&D.
    D. Automated coupling of range and/or bearing sensing devices, allowing them to control the train
and/or elevation of cannons is prohibited.
