My idea is a traditional "protect your convoy" battle, with a small twist. All convoy ships have a sharpie taped on the bow. When your convoy vessel paints a bb with its sharpie, that's x amount of points. This incentivizes unarmed ships to approach enemies, giving the battleship a point-blank shot, but also an opportunity to score points for convoys.
How about you have your convoy make dots instead of circles because it's easier Ummmm what if ships are black and are poked by a black sharpie...
Fast Gun already does something like this in their Campaign Game. Convoy ships are allowed to ram, and if a convoy successfully tags a warship, that warship is on time-out until it sails back to port and gets touched by its captain. This provides a reasonable penalty for an attacking warship getting too close, should the convoy skipper decide to get aggressive. I saw it in action at this year's Nats in NC. It's a pretty good idea, giving some teeth to the convoy ships without getting too ridiculous. Fast Gun's campaign game may have some serious and game-breaking issues, but the tag/time-out idea is not one of them. I would caution against this idea in its original form or any sort of point penalty, since that 1) doesn't immediately affect the offending warship, and 2) is either negligible in the overall battle, or adds up to ridiculous game-breaking values. Imagine a particularly aggressive convoy skipper, who goes warship-hunting instead of doing convoy runs. If he goes charging into the melee, he could potentially earn far more points in just a few minutes than his convoy run is worth.
