Sorry guys, my brother's dishwasher decided it'd be an awesome idea to give itself a Viking funeral. Thankfully he was home and the fire dept was close by, but his kitchen is pretty much a disaster zone. Been helping him get it in a reasonable condition and haven't had time to think up a question. Whoever has a question can ask it in my place.

Poking around for interesting questions, I recently read about a ship that was ordered to make an attack on a shore installation while deliberately sailing backwards during WW1. The action was considered a success. What was the name of the ship?

It is no joke at what happend. When you mentioned Viking Funeral I have to ask was Kurck Douglas on top of it? Last time I did a Viking Funeral was when my sisters turtle died. Put on a Bismark model and sent it out on a lake. Glorious! You have to admit it was better than the old toilet flush.

Sorry. I posted and forgot about it, and this is a really tough one. It was not Hood. It was during WW1, but I can't find my source any more. I'll post the answer if I find it again, but for now I'll change it to this:

This battleship fought in three major battles against the French and one major battle against the Germans. She was a major step forward in ship design and the successor to several revolutionary ships. She had the first balanced rudder in the Royal Navy and was also the last cruiser in the RN when she was decommissioned. What is the name of this ship?

I want to say Royal Sovereign, but I think it had a secondary rudder to begin with.

I had thrown the HMS Hood out there as a wild guess.
I had read something about the Hood and actions in WW1.
Since she is so famous for her actions in WW2, I thought that it would be an exccelent trivia type question.

The AE2 use reverse to break free from the shore on which she was grounded. The ship I was thinking of was not grounded, and the reverse sailing was part of the plan from the very beginning. As I recall it was an Austrian destroyer that backed up a river the bombarded some defense guns.

Royal Sovereign fought in the Anglo-Dutch Wars, the Spanish War of Succession, and against the French in numerous major battles including Trafalgar. She was the first turret ship of the Royal Navy and the namesake of a class of ten pre-dreadnoughts. She fought in WW1 and WW2 and was eventually transferred to the Soviet Navy. I'll admit she was revolutionary (first "great ship," first turret ship), however, she is not the ship that I described in my question. Sorry, Boomer. Hint 1: she had several incarnations through the ages. Hint 2: my info came from Wikipedia.

That would be HMS Blake, a Tiger-class cruiser.

HMS Blake was the last cruiser in the RN when she was decommissioned. You've got a small piece of the puzzle, Darren, but you need the rest of it. A single name will cover all the bases, and Blake didn't fight any major battles. I looked at Wikipedia and found that you can get the name I'm looking for from the articles about HMS Blake, but you're probably better off getting the other points correct. Hint: there were four completed incarnations of this ship. One fought in three major battles mentioned and is famous for another reason that would give the question away. One didn't do much. One incorporated many revolutionary changes in propulsion, hull design, and armament. One was the immediate successor to a revolutionary ship. If nobody has it by midnight pacific time I'll give another hint.

One incarnation of this ship famously participated in the Napoleonic Wars. Since the crew was unable to correctly pronounce the name of the ship they nicknamed her "Billy *******".

One incarnation of this ship carried a main battery of ten 12" cannons, but only had a broadside of 8 main guns.

if nobody gets it tomorrow, I'll answer even though I had to google it, which I consider cheating.
