The closest thing I could find was the HMS Jervis Bay taking on the Admiral Scheer a pocket battleship. But she was an armed merchantman. My wiki-fu has been found wanting I guess =D.

In the case of the French Destroyer Boulonnais attacking USS Massachusetts and the Battle off Samar where the destroyers of Taffy 3 attacked the Japanese Battle group, the Destroyers were sunk. The event I am talking about the Destroyer survived the action! This destroyer exchanged fire with the Battleship for half an hour before breaking off the attack! And was order back to port because she was low on fuel and was not able to use her torpedos.

Hrm. There was a Polish destroyer that closed with the Bismarck, but that one had friends with...

Without further hints, I think I'm going to have to admit defeat on this one. Its hard to find references to something where neither combatant got sunk.

Faulknor was leading a larger group of destroyers. There were eight DD's behind her in two columns, with Marksman leading a further four destroyers behind them.

ORP Piorun took part, along with the British destroyers, in the search for the Bismarck (she was the first of the destroyers to spot the German ship). She joined in the shadowing of and torpedo attacks on the Bismarck during the night before Bismarck was sunk, and at one point they had an exchange of fire for half an hour. According to one report (detailed at the Auschwitz I exhibition, Oswiecim, Poland), Plawski transmitted the message "I am a Pole" before commencing fire on the Bismarck. This manouvre and the subsequent withdrawal caused Piorun to lose contact with the Bismarck. Piorun was very low on fuel, so at 5 am, she was ordered home before she had used her torpedoes. Plawski was extremely reluctant to leave the area and ignored Vian's order for an hour before returning to the UK.

Since your question didn't have a valid answer, my question is: What is a question that you would ask that DOES have a correct answer? :D

I do believe that it is common knowledge about the invasion of the Philippines where four US destroyers engaged a Japanese Battleship task force.
But what about in the Atlantic.
There was an event where Destroyers attacked a Battleship!

Name the two ships and their Country? Extra points for names of the Captains.

    Interesting Note.
From what I could find, the Brit Destroyers only fired Torps at the Bismarck.
The ORP Piorun was the only ship to slug it out. 5 inch againts 15 inch guns!
