What were the names of Canada's first two submarines? And when were they acquired?

CC1 and CC2, initially Iquique and Antofagasta, built in Seattle for Chile. Chile didn't pay up, so the British Columbian government bought them. They were purchased in 1914, just after the start of WW1.

Valerya Khomyakova shot down a JU-99 in 1942 at night. She was the first Soviet woman to do the deed, and I rather imagine that non of the other combatant countries allowed women in combat roles, so that's my answer.

I am confused...that is not the person I have nor the downed plane type but I checked her name and my one and found that they both apparently were the first woman to score an aerial kill!!
My answer is Olga Yamschchikova of the Red Air Force, became the first woman night fighter pilot to score a kill. On September 24, 1942, she shot down a JU-88 bomber over Stalingrad.
Since I found the two of them are both listed as being the correct answer, I 'll have to give it to you. Well done and you' re up Mike!!

Only one of the USN Omaha class CLs engaged an enemy surface task force with gunfire. Which one?

hmmm I'll have to look at that, but I don't think so.

edit: Nope, Marblehead did not engage enemy warships in the battle of Balikpapan. In the battle of Makassar strait, she was engaged by enemy aircraft (and damaged) but did not engage any enemy surface ships.

I found that one too. I googled both names and found a couple of sites that tell the same story with different pilots.

Yep, Battle of the Kommandorski Islands, last daylight gun-only battle. Salt Lake City and Richmond vs Nachi, Maya, Abukuma and Tama (I think, always forget that last CL) with the US pulling out a win due to the fact that they escaped and prevented the resupply mission.

    you're up!
