What was the first aircraft carrier to be sunk by the IJN in WW2? (Hint Langley was a seaplane tender by now and does not count)

    Hms Hermes

she was sunk by a virtually identicall task force as the one that attacked pearl harbour,5 aircraft carriers with escorting battleships, cruisers and destroyers.

Hermes had as escort the old destroyer hmas vampire .. 26 years old ww1 V-W class with little in the way of aa defence, Hermes was old and she too lacked decent aa defence, her planes where mostly old swordfish the main arnament of Hermes was some 5.5 inch "dual purpose" guns from the 20's that lacked both elevation and had no rapid-fire capability, these guns where in open turrets and not fully power operated.

anything else i have to add ?

    yep you're up

Of note, I am pretty sure there were 6 carriers in the Kido Butai during the IO raid. Ryujo replaced Kaga.

Not exactly, they were designed by the same company, at the same time, and of similar criteria, but were not of the same class per say.

edward G halpern lists the 3 (pisa, amalfi and averoff) in the same class, in his book "the naval war in the mediterrean" and i have seen them listed as classmates on several other sites including wikipedia

wikipedia is no the best source, any one can tell you that. And like i said, they are very similar ships, but they are different and were placed under seperate orders.

Didn't that happen in the Pacific?
Or am I thinking of that US Marine that fired his 30-06 springfield at a German ship.....and hence was the first US shot fired in WW1.
