I remember something about a German liner sunk by a Russian sub in the greatest maritime disaster of all time, but not the name of the ship. It was initially ascribed to a sea-mine since the Russian captain was in bad standing with his commanders. Is this what you are thinking about?

I had to look it up to find the answer, but I think I have it. I'll give someone else a chance to answer first, then give mine tomorrow evening.

Isn't that the sub that started as USS Squalus? Sank, survivors rescued, boat raised, sank again, raised again, finally returned to drydock, repaired, renamed, and served successfully throughout WW2.

Everyone knows the tragic story of Titanic, yet the entire Olympic class of ocean liners suffered bad luck.

Olympic collided with the British cruiser Hawke causing extensive damage in 1911.

Titanic struck an iceberg and sank with heavy loss of life in 1912.

Britannic hit a mine and sank in 1916.

One person survived all three of these events. Who is this person?

That's correct, bb26. Violet Jessop survived the Olympic class, but the last two ships certainly didn't survive Violet Jessop.

She was a stewardess on Olympic and Titanic and a nurse aboard Britannic when it was a hospital ship in WWI.

And while Knight makes a good point, Violet actually did continue sailing with White Star and other lines until she retired in 1950.

Has anyone looked at the fate of the other ships Violet Jessop sailed on?
Did any other ship sink while she was sailing on it?
I bet that she was an expert at the life boat drill!

(Warning, these are not official triva questions. Just questions that came to mind while reading the posts.)

Had to look up other ships of Violet Jessop.
After white star she sailed on the "Red Star Lines" on the HMS Belgenland. (She had sailed around the world on this one!)
The Belgenland was built in 1914 and originally served as a freighter and World War I troopship for the White Star Line under the name SS Belgic.
This ship was scrapped in 1936. WOW, one that did not sink!
