I know I probably shouldn't be working on a second ship, but this was something for me to do while I wait for the parts for my Suffren to get here from Hong Kong.
I'm working on the plug at the moment. This is sort of a mix-match boat. I downloaded the hull templets that Tugboat put on here, and the rest is all guess work.
So on with the pictures. ( I know you guys love lots of pics so I took a lot)

This is just the plug, but I'm hoping that later I can sell the hulls for people that want one. ( just a thought of mine)
The balsa on the top is just there for strength at the moment.
The stern still need some more work to get the right shape, but that can wait for later.
Enjoy, and if you see something that doesn't look right, let me know.

I was wondering how Great Stuff expandable foam would work for filling in between the ribs? You can't beat the prices on the stuff.
Also what do I put between the plug and the fiberglass so the fiberglass hull won't stick to the plug?

RE: V-106 Build Great stuff would work fine - BUT... spray enough that it will expand and fill the areas, and know that you're going to need to take a knife to it to trim it down, then sand it flat. A layer of epoxy over the whole thing would be good for sealing it prior to use.

Put a layer of aluminum foil (neatly) over the plug. That will keep the fiberglass and resin hulls from sticking to your plug.

RE: V-106 Build Thanks, Tugboat! That's just the information I was looking for. Do you know long the forward raised deck is?

RE: V-106 Build I can look it up when I get home. I have a plastic model of V106, I'll try to take some pictures for you.

RE: V-106 Build Thanks, I'm looking forward to seeing them. As soon as I get the measurement on how long the front deck is, I can fill V-106 up with foam and start sanding.

RE: V-106 Build Hey, Tugboat, does 3.4" sound about right for the length of that top deck? I took a side profile photo and scaled to the right length on paint and that's the measurement that I got.
I found this guy building a 1/48 scale V-105. I don't think I could make a hull half as good as his. http://www.shipmodels.info/mws_forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=151034

RE: V-106 Build Cool. I need to bookmark that if I ever do an HMS Swift. It has the same sort of overhanging rudder.

Tugboat, don't rush yourself. I don't even have the foam yet.

RE: V-106 Build In 1:96, the step is 8.5" back from the point of the bow.

I guess my estimate wasn't very accurate.
I would have worked on that deck today, but I'm currently regluing the bow back on. It seems that my epoxy joint failed. So I'm trying Tite-bond this time.
Now I need to get some foam. (Sighs) So much stuff to get, so little time to get it.

RE: V-106 Build I have some questions on the front deck. How wide is it at its widest point? I thought that it would be as wide as the frames, but looking at this profile picture it seems that it's wider than that.
So, what so I do, go by the plans, or by the frame width?

I have that foam now, so as soon as I get this part done she'll be full of foam.

I wasn't sure which to go by, because looking at other peoples' models, it looks like it's the same width as the frames.
So, if it is wider, do I taper the hull outward to meet the deck?

RE: V-106 Build I got the top deck cut out, but have one more question. On this piece that is circled, what is it supposed to look like?
I've seen it look two ways, but which is right #1, or #2?

Thanks, Anachronus! That helped a lot. So I guess it's neither of the two.:)

I figured I'd upload some photographic proof that I was working on V-106 and not just saying I was.
So here are the pictures of the new deck.
