Yep, according to the article, one million in PRIVATE FUNDS went into the development. NASA spent the grand total of $956 in taxpayer money to purchase 400 pens. Prices have gone up a bit over the years. Today an AG7 pen will cost you $58 instead of the $2.39 each NASA paid for them. I'd guess Fisher pens have made a healthy return on investment by now. BTW, pens are a safety requirement in zero g.
