As far as critical damage goes, watching any take below the waterline, the most I've seen was on Musashi or maybe Nelson. The problem with determining which is likely to cause the ship to sink faster depends on whether the ship is stationary or not. hundreds of holes above the water line, versus twenty below. I wouldn't move sir. You own movement will put you down. Nothing here has changed my mind that the Yamato can still hold out the longest, especially with a good pump.
Absent a technical failure, unless you do everyone vs yamato, the Yammer is for all intents an mobile island that you can score points on for shore bombardment.
I don't think the point of the thread was to convince you otherwise. The Yamato is the largest, and therefore should take the highest amount of punishment before sinking. However, as a capital ship it will get more of a pounding than a light cruiser, simply because its easier to hit. *Note this statement assumes the light cruiser isn't suicidal. To me I believe a ship's "staying power" is proportionally related to size & speed. Unfortunately, size & speed are inversely related. So the point of this thread was to discuss where that point is where speed & size balance to make the highest staying power. So doing a direct comparison to the Iowa, the Yamato has 71658tons @27knots & Iowa has 59331tons @ 33knots. So a new captain has to ask him/herself, is 6 knots worth 12327tons? Which will be more effective in battle? When I battled Alsace in a MWC fight, It really hit home that weapon effectiveness = life. If you cannot make a single hit on another ship because they are too fast, then your weapons are not effective, and no matter what else you do you will sink. Displacement will only slow your decent to the depths. The trick is make your opponents decent faster than yours, more displacement only lets you have more time to accomplish that.
You know you guys just might edjemecate me yet. I could actually follow that one. I guess in the end. If we strike out Yamato, Does that mean Iowa wins!?!?! Cause that would be too cool, and I'm tired of trying to support Curt's Baby! LOL hahahaha What say you?
Any ship can win. USS AUGUSTA sinking Bismarck with just a concentrated round of fire at one spot on the bow. It didn't help that was the only damage on Bismarck and I couldn't get a shot on him his stern was always on my bow and he was always a head of me just within range of his stern gun. He created a large hole and I had pump failure at the worst time. Doesn't matter it depends on the holes created. A pump can only do so much.
It's true that any ship can win, given the right situation. I think the question could be better phrased as: "what ship would you take one-on-one with any other battleship on the pond, and win?" for Big Gun clubs, it's most likely the Iowa. It has an excellent blend of speed, firepower, and size. As long as Yamato and Iowa have equal armament, the Iowa's 33 knot speed allows it to choose where and when to engage. Now if a rule were passed allowing 5/16" caliber cannons for guns 18" and over, you'd be hearing a different tune. For Fast Gun clubs, I'm not the best judge in this category. If I had to pick, it'd be Yamato because the speed difference is eliminated. From there, the extra displacement makes all the difference. Of course, that Space Battleship Yamato trumps all, but it's a little outside our time period. Ask your club officers for a waiver
I'd take a Richilieu in Big Guns. The concentrated fire power out weighs the displacement in this case I think
One of my buddies is building a montana. He's invited me to operate the rear guns. planned launch date is set for summer 2007, in time for the WWCC annual Axis-Allies Campaign Battle. WWCC rules limit Montana to only three turrets, but I get to operate two of 'em
Yes, there have been a few press releases. This photo series is not up to date, due to school and other factors. http://www.westernwarshipcombat.com/gallery/album28?page=1 The ship is designed as an "area denial" weapon. It's design requirements include continuous firing at maximum rate of fire for over 45 minutes, along with armor and damage control to survive whatever the Axis can throw at it for that time. It's the type of ship that you PARK at a major traffic area (ports and cargo routes come to mind) and destroy anything that dares approach. It will also have between 1 to 3 operators at any one time, controlling helm, front guns, and stern guns. The idea is to get a rookie or two on guns, and let a veteran put the ship where it'll have something to shoot at. But before we let new recruits man the guns, we've gotta work out the bugs and get it a good reputation. so for its debut battle, I've been invited to operate the stern cannons and do what I do best. (that is, sink other ships)
Oooohh.... Ahhhh.... Very nice work by the builder. It's a shame it only gets 3 main gun turrets. I take it that the 3 extra barrels per side are torpedoes? And with the huge CO2 bottles, where do the batteries go? I can't wait to see pics of her in her first battle!
Wow! I tip my hat to you! That is the best quality woodmanship I have ever seen and the machinery is I can't describe it. 2 20 oz bottles? Wow.Incredible. I don't know what else to say .. I am speechless.
She will hit the water this summer. The "extra barrels" were a joke pic, putting torpedoes from a Capitani Romani cruiser in to see how much extra firepower we could theoretically fit on. I am especially proud of the woodwork. I got to carve the stern and helped lay in ribs. Everything was built super-beefy to support the weight of the ship without much flexing, but we've already had to reinforce the keel. The two 20-oz CO2 bottles are to help with the endurance requirements. Combined, the magazines should hold well over 1000 rounds of 1/4" steel. Since the Montana doesn't have to go at Fast Gun speeds, she will use direct drive to several high-efficiency motors. Power will come from a pair of 12V 7Ah gel cell batteries, with two more on the charger, to be changed halfway through the day. I'll bet that her turning will be beastly, but that's OK since she was intended to be a beast from the beginning. All she's got to do is get to the general area of the battle, and bring her broadside to bear.
