Is there anywhere to purchase a Yorktown Class Carrier fiberglass hull? I have been looking on the various sites and have not really found anything in the 1/144 scaled area. Thanks in advance, I appreciate any and all asisstance.

I realize you indicated yorktown class. As in CV-5 not C-10 correct?

    Yes Mike,
Looking at doing a Hornet with B-25's on deck to replicate the Doolittle Raid.

Awesome! I will take a look through my resources. Hopefully someone beats me to the punch though.

If you are unable to find a hull and decide to scratch build one, you can download the CV-5 plans from http://www.hnsa.org/doc/plans/index.htm

Thanks Mark, that is a great site. I have already downloaded the plans. Interestingly enough I tried scratch building USS Cimarron X3 and failed miserably. You would figure that an Industrial Engineer could scratch build a hull. My family got plenty of laughs out of my efforts. So hence It would be my preference to do a fiberglass hull, however if I do not have any luck I will try again.

Ken, scratch-building is more like a dark art than an exact science--I know many very experienced scale modelers who cannot scratch-build. I highly recommend Mike Mangus' Bearn build thread to get you started.

For what it's worth, it looks like an easy build.
Anyone out there have a frames drawing for her?

No problemo. I know that I have a mess of carrier (amongst others) plans in the shop and on the hard drive. When I get home I'll look around and see if I can find anything.

I am a bit intimidated on trying to build another scratch hull. But I found a custom aircraft builder that hand makes 1:144 scaled aircraft. He does make B-25 Mitchells. When I was younger my dad introduced me to Ted Lawson, a pilot from the Doolittle raid. He wrote the book 30 Seconds over Tokyo. I have always wanted to build the Hornet with Doolittle's Raiders. I am willing to try once again.

What part(s) gave you the most trouble on your previous attempt?

Ken, I hope you can get that built, It will look awesome running on a pond and on a table at a hobby show, I would remove the planes for combat though, bad things happen to planes on the deck during combat ;)

I tried to interpolate the ribs from the plans. I did not have the right amount of frames, my keel did not truly support the framing structure. Basically it was a disaster and I trashed several plywood sheets of Finnish Birch in my three failed attempts. I did not have anyone in my area that to bounce questions or doubts off of. Reading on the forums about building a scratch hull is nice, but does not tell all. Like I said, though I am willing to try again.

    PamnJay,
I had thought that I would buld two decks for it, one for show (with B-25's on it) and a second battle deck for combat.

A very good idea, we have two cut out for the ISE, same kinda deal. One for show with expensive parts and one with sacrificial parts (it just looks cool as parts are blown off)

The best plans I can locate from work are the Maryland Silver company's blueprint book ($80). I hope I have something at home!

Sadly, I do not have CV-5 at home. I have Lex and Sara, but no other US CVs.
