For my Graf Spee it is recommend that I have a 550 (not sure what that means). When I got shopping, I see a lot of type 3, I don't know what that means either.

Could someone give me a brief overview on motors so I can be more educated when shopping for the right motors?

I am also semi-shopping for a Bismarck but that is future build.

I don’t see them on the Allelectronics site any more…

you will want bigger than a 550 in a Bis… single shaft itll be taxed to hell trying to get that heavy boat moving.

What does 550 mean? What does type 3 mean?

For the Graf Spee and the Biz. I was planning on having all of the shafts live unless the rules say I cant do that.

Thats not the best choice. You typically only want the inner shaft on a 3 shaft ship.
550 is the size of the motor. No idea on the “type”
You have 330, 360, 380, 540, 550, 770, 775, etc. they all refer to different sizes of motors.

In terms of size then what do the numbers mean? Power? Torque?

550 is a class of motor relating to the physical size of the motor, it doesn't really mean anything in terms of performance.(other than larger motors tend to be more powerful) IE various 550 motors can have wildly difference performance. Performance is based on windings/magnets/voltage/etc

I run RS-555's in my Lutzow, direct drive at 12V with ~1.25" props for IRCWCC format. Here a link to an example, they can also be found other places online https://www.ebay.com/itm/323511821172 . 380 motors direct drive will be near limit (edge of burning up), I've been very happy with the 555's. Here's my build/refit thread https://rcwarshipcombat.com/threads/dkm-luetzow-ircwcc.446131/
